When you suddenly encounter an intense fear or anxiety, you are experiencing a panic attack. Left untreated, it can develop into a more serious condition such as panic disorder, and lead to other problems, which may then cause you to withdraw from your everyday activities. However, there are now many cures for panic attacks, and the earlier you ask for treatment, the better and quicker you will overcome it.

As panic attacks can happen anytime and anywhere, it can all the more be a frightening experience for many, leading them unable to solve their problems. Heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness and nausea, trembling or having a tingling sensation, and even fear of dying are some of the classic symptoms of a panic attack. Some people even aggravate the situation when they think that they are having a heart attack, instead of a panic attack.

Even though a panic attack lasts only several minutes, the symptoms experienced by a person can greatly mark him or her; leading the person to refuse to do normal activities, for fear of having another panic attack. The person would not want to go to a place where it would be embarrassing if he or she has a panic attack, or where escape would be difficult or impossible.

There are many studies on how to treat panic attacks, and they are usually treated with cognitive behavioral therapy, or by medication. Sometimes, it can also be a combination of both. Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on the thinking patterns and behavior that cause the panic attacks. It teaches you to look at your fears in a more realistic light.

Treatment using medications can be used to reduce, if not control, the symptoms of a panic attack. However, people should not rely on it alone, but combine it with a lifestyle change and other natural treatments so that it would be more effective. Antidepressants are also used as treatment for panic attack, taking several weeks for its effects to be felt. If one wants immediate relief however, benzodiazepine should be taken instead, as it offers immediate relief.

What one needs to remember is that in spite of all these treatments, it is still best to learn about the causes of a panic attack, as this alone can greatly help someone understand and control what is happening. Breathing control is one example of a skill one can develop in order to help one relax and calm down. Different relaxation techniques help strengthen the bodyƕs relaxation response, and this enables the person to overcome fear and anxiety.
