Despite their superstar status and larger-than-life personalities, the rich and famous can often be the victims of panic or phobias. The fact that they have these fears and anxieties reveals how much like the rest of us they can be.
It is not uncommon for celebrities have phobias that hound millions of other non-celebrities as well. What do some of the rich and famous fear most often?
Michael Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, and Jennifer Aniston share the same fear of flying. Orlando Bloom is has a fear of pigs and Johnny Depp has a fear of clowns. Nicole Kidman is afraid of butterflies. And would you believe that Pamela Anderson is scared of mirrors?
Celebrities and non-celebrities can break out into panic attacks any time they are exposed to the situation that they are afraid of the most. While it is not uncommon to be apprehensive about having to face a certain fear or situation, there are some cases in which the fear can be so overwhelming that it results in a full-blown panic attack.
What is a panic attack? A panic attack is a sudden intense fear followed by an overwhelming feeling of danger. It can often be accompanied by sweating, rapid breathing, and rapid heart beat. Panic attacks are sudden and unprovoked. They can even worsen into a debilitating condition that can have a detrimental affect on a person’s total life. An attack can occur at anytime and it can disrupt everyday activities. An untreated panic disorder can possibly lead to substance abuse, depression and, in rare cases, even suicide.
Those who have full-blown, repeated attacks can be psychologically disabled by their condition and should seek treatment. They should also be sure to avoid the situations that could trigger another panic attack. Panic attacks are not dangerous, but they can be terrifying, mostly because it causes a feeling of ‘having no hope’ on the part of the person who is suffering from it.
Occasional bouts with worry and moderate levels of anxiety are considered normal. However, panic attacks that occur more often can be an indication that a person is under extreme psychological stress. Persons who experience frequent, debilitating panic attacks should seek the help of a mental health professional immediately. Only a licensed therapist can diagnose a panic disorder.
Anyone who thinks that he or she may be experiencing frequent times of panic or anxiety are advised to join a support organization or find a counselor to talk with. Even a simple thing like talking to a family member, church counselor, or friend can do wonders.
There are many techniques to manage stress that can also assist people to control their panic symptoms. Frequent exercise is also known to have a calming effect on a person saddled with fear and panic.
