It took many years but Emily at long last decided that she had enough with her husband’s careless and excessive drinking. She was sick of seeing Barry come home after 2:00 AM from drinking rather than spending time with the family. She was also exhausted from the second DUI Barry recently got. Furthermore she was exhausted from making justifications for her spouse when he couldn’t make it to work on a regular basis due to his problems with drinking. In a similar manner she was worried and depressed about the fact that their relationship was going downhill due to Barry’s abusive and unhealthy drinking. And lastly she was weary from the precarious financial mess into which he had put his family due to his abusive and excessive drinking behavior. In sum, Emily felt that her mental health was drifting away due to Barry’s drinking problems.
When Abusive and Careless Drinking Inspires a Person to do Something Affirmative About an Individual’s Drinking Problem
One Friday morning when Emily was reflecting on what she could do about her husband’s abusive drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something to cut into the unhealthy cycle of Barry’s abusive and hazardous drinking behavior.
So she looked online under “alcohol rehab” and found numerous treatment clinics that were all located less than ten miles away from where she and Barry resided.
Due to the fact that she didn’t know a lot about these rehabilitation facilities, she finally determined that she needed to call some of them and ask a couple of questions. When she called each treatment center she introduced herself and said that Barry, her spouse, was manifesting hazardous and abusive drinking behavior. She also said that her husband had a top-rate health insurance program at work and that outpatient or residential alcohol rehabilitation would be covered if a physician in the company health plan authorized the rehabilitation.
At one treatment facility, Emily was stunned that she was able to communicate directly with a doctor who asked her to come to the treatment facility to talk about her husband’s unhealthy drinking behavior in much greater detail.
Emily Talks to a Doctor About Her Husband’s Excessive Drinking
When Emily got to the rehab center, she filled out some forms and then after approximately ten or fifteen minutes got to see a counselor.
After listening to Emily talk about her husband’s unhealthy drinking, the healthcare professional in a caring but resolute manner explained to Emily how she may have played a major role in her spouse’s abusive and excessive drinking through the years by covering for him instead of letting him go through the outcomes of his hazardous drinking behavior.
Emily Learns That She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Irresponsible and Abusive Drinking
Stated in a slightly different way, the healthcare practitioner told Emily that she may have been inadvertently enabling Barry’s excessive and careless drinking behavior. The counselor also stressed the fact that even though Emily could not control her spouse’s actions, with the support and guidance of the rehabilitation team at the rehabilitation clinic she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Barry’s careless drinking but she could also learn how to help him make an appointment at the rehabilitation facility so that he could go over his excessive and abusive drinking behavior with a psychologist.
The good news was that after Emily explained this to Barry, and he saw that she meant business, Barry told her that he had been very nervous regarding his abusive drinking behavior and that he was very thankful to learn that Emily wanted to do something productive about his hazardous and careless drinking behavior. As a consequence, he made an appointment to see a healthcare professional at the local alcohol treatment facility.
Barry Agrees to Meet With a Healthcare Professional About His Irresponsible Drinking
While simply calling a rehab clinic does not guarantee that an individual’s drinking problem behavior will become less problematic or that one’s warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one exhibits will simply go away, scheduling an appointment is evidently a vital component in the rehabilitation process. And because Barry was serious about getting rehab for his unhealthy and abusive drinking, the probability for a successful recovery was considerably increased.
