Causes of Memory Loss

July 3rd, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

As with most problems it is wize to establish the cause of the problem so that you can fix it.

Before you can make any significant changes in terms of improving your memory it is important that you learn about the different causes of memory loss. By determining what the most common root problems are you will be able to make a much more substantial change and figure out the best ways to improve your own memory.

 Causes of Memory Loss

There are many causes of memory loss, both short and long-term, and depression and anxiety are both very common components in both cases. These conditions can both result in causing a kind of brain fog that makes it difficult for the sufferer to remember even the simplest day to day things, and the worst part of all is that this often causes them to become even more depressed and anxious and they then get caught in a vicious cycle.

Low blood sugar levels are also very contributing to memory loss, in particular short-term memory loss. Blood sugar can become too low as a result of not eating the right foods or by having a health condition such as diabetes.

Aging of course is one of the most common and major causes of memory loss, and although most people already know this, what many people are not aware of is that there are things you can do to keep your memory from failing you. Everyone ages and memory loss is an almost unavoidable factor that comes with age.

So although you cannot fully prevent your memory from fading there are things that you can do in order to keep it as strong as possible.

 Keep Active

We all know how important keeping physically active is, but it is just as important to keep our brains healthy and active as well. This can be done in a number of different ways, and doing crossword or jigsaw puzzles, playing trivia games, and taking memory improvement courses are all really great things that you can do to help improve your memory.

Even though there are many known causes of memory loss there are also some which are not yet completely recognized, and so for your memory and your health in general, it is important that you life as healthy a lifestyle as possible. This means eating a nutritional and well-balanced diet, and getting lots of exercise. You should also quit any unhealthy habits that you may have, such as smoking or excessive alcohol drinking, as these can cause memory loss as well.

Baby Memory Books

July 3rd, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

What are baby memory books?

Baby memory books are NOT books designed to improve your baby’s memory capacity – not unless your baby can recite the periodic table of the elements while still in the womb.  No, the people doing the remembering are the parents and other relatives of the baby.  Taking care of babies is an incredibly hectic blur – so that the parents will need reminding of what their kids looked like as babies when they finally have time to sleep regularly.  Baby memory books (also called baby keepsake books) are a great way to chronicle the first year or years of a child.  You can also use them as blackmail for when the child eventually starts dating. (“Here’s something your prom date would love to see, Junior.”  “Oh, please, not the naked baby pictures again!”)

 Organization Not Necessary

You don’t have to be the world’s most organized parent in order to use baby memory books.  These books do all of the organizing for you.  They are like templates for web pages, only in book form.  All you do is fill in the blanks or paste a photo or newspaper clipping in.  My parents got “Baby’s First Five Years” because they knew they’d be too tired to keep a lot of detail for each year.

Baby memory books are a great place to keep information vitally important for your pediatrician, your baby and any genealogists in the family.  They also are colorful, sturdy and good for a laugh.  In Mom’s baby memory book about me, there are different sheets for attaching my birth announcement from the paper, for writing down the foods I liked and disliked and for my medical records.  A lock of hair from my first haircut is still in there, as well as a little family tree.

 Where To Get Them

Baby memory books often look like large photo or wedding albums.  They should be available in large discount stores, craft stores, stores that cater to baby supplies and places that sell photo albums.  You can also find them from online stores.  They cost more than a regular photo album, but they have a lot more in it than just blank pages to hold photos.  Baby memory books come in themes – like Peter Rabbit, or Baby’s First Christmas – and is usually made specifically for a boy or a girl, although unisex ones do exist.  They have become more popular as the hobby of scrap booking has become more popular.

Human Brain Memory

July 3rd, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

Memory functions in the brain in a very complicated fashion. To date, scientists are unable to design computers that can compete with the human brain. But, it is promising in the next two or three decades that scientists may be able to devise advanced computers with the help of nanotechnology, cybernetics and biotech resources.

Scientists and researchers have put their wise efforts to discover and uncover all the elements of the human memory system in order to get a better understanding of its encoding and retrieving processes. These understandings are crucially important for improving the quality of an individual’s memory and recollection process.

Human Brain Structure and Memory System

Our thought, senses, memory and actions all influence distinct sets of nerve cells and chemicals within our brain. The hippocampus, the amygdale and close areas of temporal lobe are associated to the cortex with the help of complex nerve cells. This actually forms the fundamental structure of our memory system.

When a nerve cell in the brain gets activated, a low-charged electrical potential is sent to the axon. This helps in releasing brain chemicals or neurotransmitters, which attain across the synaptic gaps between nerve cells and bolt onto the corresponding receptors. The nerve cells that obtain the brain chemicals then send the signal along to other relevant nerve cells. This happens like a relay race.

When the same signals are received repeatedly, the synaptic changes occur more efficiently contributing to the physical changes among synaptic connections. This is how the human brain stores memory on a long term basis. Scientists and researchers assume that the changes in particular synaptic patterns in folds and ridges of human brain contribute to memory encoding for lengthy time span. In fact, convoying electrochemical associations constituted between different cells in human brain help storing memory including thoughts, skills, knowledge and experiences.

 Research on Human brain memory

There are debates on the distribution of memory over the human brain. While some scientists assume that human brain constitutes memory in a particular region within the brain structure, some others claim that human brain does not localize memory within a particular territory, that is, memory is all over distributed through out the brain structure.

Scientists claim that the cell functions corresponding to learning and memory process are indistinguishable at the biological level. In fact, proof has been already established in the support of the strong correlation between learning process and memory system. It is also assumed that to execute the learning process, the human brain employs multiple memory systems, each of which is engaged to encode different sorts of memory functions.
